The AuthorsRoy grew up in a blue collar community in Massachusetts and spent thirty years as a Sergeant Major learning the central insights of this book. He has been a management professor, consultant, trainer – business owner, menial employee and middle manager. Roy has written more than a hundred publications and presentations in the area of management and passionately believes that producing effective, profitable organizations is best done by producing organizations which support and develop employees. He is the author of Manufacturing the Employee (London:Sage, 1996). Roy has followed all three of the paths we discuss as options for the Sergeant Major. Roy has an MBA and PhD in Management from the Uinversity of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mary comes from a small business family in Yorkshire, England. She brings both a practitioner’s and an editor’s perspective to the book. Mary spent many years running high tech startup companies internationally, primarily in Russia. Although not a Sergeant Major herself, Mary has worked shoulder to shoulder with many and has developed a talent for managing them (watch for our next book, Managing the Sergeant Major). Mary has a Master’s degree in computer science from the University of East Anglia and an Honorary Doctorate from the International Hermes Academy, a prominent Russian research academy.
